    2017 NEC Art. 210.63
Heating, Air conditioning, and Refrigeration Equipment Outlet.

The required receptacle outlet shall not be connected to the load side of the equipment disconnecting means.

There are disconnects equipped with built-in GFI receptacles.

Their purpose may not be targeted at A/C, but they are in use

    for A/C disconnects.

HVAC contractors are pulling power for these receptacles from the line

Side of the A/C disconnect. They explain supply houses are informing.

them this meets code compliance. This is because the power is taken.

prior to the disconnect fuses on the line side, not the load side.

Using this GFI built-in outlet and the line side of the disconnect would

require the following. A 3-conductor with ground. Disconnect terminals.

Approved and marked for more than one conductor per terminal.

Would the code missing the word line and load side of the equipment give

permission for allowing line side receptacle power?

I have not seen a cut sheet on these disconnects.

I do not see this as a code-compliant way to meet the intent of the

2017 NEC Art. 210.63 Please supply your thoughts on this.

It is so great to have our own discussion forum up and running again.

    Thank you all

They can't tap off the line side for a few reasons.

    1. There is no neutral in feeder.

    2. Without doing a tap rule the overcurrent would be to high.

    3. It says so right in the disconnect. Look at pictures.

Steve, Thank you so much for the feedback.

I pointed out your remarks in my write-up and other issues with their attempts to use the wording in Art. 210.63.

It would be helpful if the wording included line or load side of the disconnect.

I don't know if any other of our inspectors have been exposed to this type of installation. I have never passed this as code compliant but wanted to put this out there for everyone.

So great to see the Discussion Forum up and running again.

    Thank You again.

    Very Respectfully,
